Leave No One Behind

Copenhagen Architecture Festival’s global short film competition focusing on the goals of the UN's agenda.

The winners of the Film Mosaic competition are invited to attend Copenhagen Architecture Festival 2023, taking place in parallel with the World Capital of Architecture and UIA2023CPH World Congress. More than 300 film submissions have been received, and an international jury has nominated the winners.

Background

The Leave No One Behind (LNOB) agenda is the central, transforming promise in the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It represents the unequivocal commitment of all UN Member States to eradicate poverty in all its forms, end discrimination and exclusion, and reduce the inequalities and vulnerabilities that undermine the potential of humans and other living beings.

Discrimination persists in the design of the built and planned environment, indoors, outdoors, public and private. This includes discrimination against socially, physically or mentally vulnerable or challenged groups based on gender, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, limited mobility or income.

The Film Mosaic aims at documenting solutions to these forms of discrimination, creating an understanding of the diversity of the reality in which the LNOB agenda must be resolved, and generating new knowledge and insight about sustainable cities, residential areas, buildings, building materials, infrastructure, and other urban practices that promote the fight against inequality.

Outcome

The incoming films will result in a global Film Mosaic of everyday voices from different geographical and cultural contexts, available for researchers, educators, laymen and decision-makers during and after the competition. The Film Mosaic will be used as a powerful tool of impact during the UIA 2023 World Congress towards the many decision-makers gathered in Copenhagen then—and as the point of departure for a bigger impact campaign that can spread rings beyond 2023.

One of the oldest industrial enterprises of the city of St. Petersburg.The first rubber factory in Russia.Since the beginning of the 2000s, the factory buildings have been in a deplorable state. Most of the plant's premises are abandoned. The windows are broken. And the territory of the plant itself no longer belongs to its original owners and is attractive for lovers of the aesthetics of abandoned buildings. Several shoe companies operate in separate buildings of the industrial zone, but the volume of production of rubber shoes is very small.Sevkabel Port is a favorite place for residents of St. Petersburg in the Harbor of Vasilievsky Island. A recently closed industrial area, today it is one of the most welcoming and hospitable spaces of the city. All the monuments of industrial architecture that are on the territory are carefully restored, endowed with new modern functions. And the architectural concept of the project delicately emphasizes the historical memory of the place. There are various functional zones on the territory of the Port where you can create projects, work, spend free time, engage in creativity and sports. There are bureaus, workshops and offices, exhibition, concert and sports halls, children's studios, shops and showrooms, restaurants, cafes and bars.Today, the share of the so-called "gray belt" in the central part of the city is almost 40%. The appearance of the "gray belt" is a feature of more than one St. Petersburg. Many cities in Europe, and indeed all over the world, have faced this problem to varying degrees. Based on convincing examples of renovation of depressive zones, we are able to adapt former industrial buildings to new functions!

As you delve deeper into the stark reality of these spaces, immerse yourself in the melancholic ambiance and contemplate the live that evolves every second. Will we change it sometimes? Who knows.

favela improvement project in Brasilia

The project of improvement of the residential area of the favela in Brasilia is made in the form of a three-dimensional layout using the following materials. The project provides layouts of public toilets. They are painted with white, brown and pink acrylic paint. Next to the toilets, trees -birches, maples - are planted at a distance of 5-7 meters. These trees pull up to 200 liters of water out of the ground in 24 hours. This solution significantly reduces sewage waste water. Drinking taps should be provided on the streets of favelas.
